The Susquehanna Art Museum exhibits nationally and internationally recognized artists to educate, inspire and foster creative exploration, collaboration and public engagement.
SAM works to accomplish its mission through the following major initiatives:
- Commonwealth Art Alliance: As a non-collecting institution, the Susquehanna Art Museum’s Commonwealth Art Alliance initiative establishes a link of premiere museums and promotes the sharing of art and expertise in a model that offers the wealth of this partnership to the citizens of Pennsylvania.
-DOSHI: Since 1972, the DOSHI Gallery for Contemporary Art has showcased the works of emerging and established artists from the Central Pennsylvania region to nurture the creative spirit and provide a forum for contemporary artists to learn, grow and network.
-VanGo!: The VanGo! Museum on Wheels provides an innovative cultural arts experience for students of all ages, connecting the visual arts and academics in a program that is exciting, educational and meaningful.
The Susquehanna Art Museum strives to be a cultural anchor for the Central Pennsylvania community, providing innovative, relevant and engaging exhibitions and experiences for members and visitors of all ages that excite, inspire and stimulate life-long learning, while also promoting economic development and tourism in our city, region and state.
At SAM, we believe in the following Core Values:
We strive to inspire life-long learning in visitors of all ages through unique educational experiences with original and significant artworks.
We seek to build community, both within the walls of the museum as well as within the region. We strive to encourage partnering with other artistic academic, cultural and professional communities to more effectively utilize shared resources and better serve the community at large.
We applaud the creative spirit in all its forms. We continue to seek innovative ways to inspire and honor creative ideas from the community, staff and SAM supporters.
As Harrisburg’s only dedicated art museum, we take seriously the responsibility of presenting innovative approaches to art and lifelong learning.
We believe that the emotional response to art has the ability to foster human connectedness. We are committed to engaging diverse audiences through exhibitions and experiences that promote understanding and social discourse.
