Title: Warmth of Light, Chill of Night

During the June 21st summer solstice, the sun will reach the highest point in the sky. This will be our longest period of daylight during the year. As winter fades and we move into spring, our environment will change significantly. We will have longer days and the sun will warm the earth. How will the change in season alter what we see and feel around us? Artists are asked to consider the effects of sunlight and seasons on color, atmosphere, shadow and other artistic elements.

The Susquehanna Art Museum’s VanGo! Museum on Wheels program brings original works of art to your school for an innovative cultural arts program that connects the visual arts and academics and provides an exciting, engaging, and educational experience for all ages!

A VanGo! Museum on Wheels visit is a wonderful addition to your yearly cultural arts offerings:

Program format can be adjusted to suit the needs of your school/site – a sample schedule is available to assist you in making the most of yourVanGo! visit.

In order to ensure the safety of the art objects, schools of more than 500 students must book a second day visit.

VanGo! can comfortably accommodate 15-18 students per group – please keep this in mind when scheduling individual classes to view the exhibit. Larger classes may need to be split into separate groups. Contact us with questions.

A critical component to the VanGo! experience is the multimedia assembly program that provides important background information on the exhibit, artists and museum etiquette. The assembly serves to inspire and prepare students for their visit to VanGo!

For the assembly program, the VanGo! educator will need the following: a microphone, screen, a large room, a laptop with USB drive. a digital projector, and an AV cart or table for presentation equipment.

An curriculum manual can be downloaded and copied for all participating teachers – it contains background materials and activities that can augment your VanGo! experience.

The VanGo! Museum on Wheels bus is fully handicap accessible; please indicate on your schedule any classes which require special access.

Open Studio: First Thursday of each month from 6-8pm

The DŌSHI Gallery will continue to maintain its schedule of monthly Open Studio critique sessions, where artists openly discuss their works in progress with trained professional artists. The first Thursday of every month, SAM opens its doors to artists in the community and offers two hours of valuable peer to peer conversation and critique. Artists discuss technical issues, ideas, current trends, artistic philosophies and the overall concerns of today’s artist.

Attendance has no impact on acceptance into either a solo show or a group show. We do hope, however, that it will be an enriching experience by itself.

Open Studio is held at 15 North Third Street, in Downtown Harrisburg at SAM’s temporary office space donated by Susquehanna Bank.

The Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM), developed the VanGo! Museum on Wheels in 1992. The mission of the VanGo! program is to provide exposure to original works of art to people who otherwise lack such opportunities. At the heart of this project is a belief that an art educational experience of quality should expose viewers to the primary source, rather than reproductions.

VanGo! exhibitions follow the school year, running from September through July. Each year, the exhibit addresses a theme focused around the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, while presenting visually exciting original works of art. Works are chosen from prominent contemporary artists who have exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world. VanGo! provides an innovative cultural arts program that connects the visual arts and academics and provides an exciting, engaging and educational experience like no other.

VanGo! targets audiences in areas roughly 2-2.5 hours from the Harrisburg area. VanGo! reaches visitors in areas where a quality art museum may be hours away. Host sites are charged a nominal fee for visits; fees vary according to location. Each year, generous sponsors provide funding that helps to defray the overall cost to schools, allowing SAM to offer this incredible program at a much lower cost.

Educational components that augment the VanGo! program include an interactive multimedia assembly program and comprehensive educator manual that includes background information on works of art/artists in the exhibit, as well as worksheets and activities that can be easily adapted to any grade level and foster learning in many academic areas beyond the arts. The educator manual can be downloaded off the Museum’s website and photocopied for each participating teacher at a host school; the manual is intended to provide a means to incorporate the visual arts into other academic curricula. The manual can be used year round, or in conjunction with the VanGo! program.

Since the program’s inception, VanGo! has touched the lives of over 350,000 visitors, inspiring and enriching the educational experience of students throughout our Commonwealth. For more information on VanGo!, its current exhibit or to schedule a visit, please contact the Education Department at 717-233-8668 x 5 or by email at cbomberger@sqart.org. Schools are encouraged to book VanGo! visits early, as dates tend to fill up rather quickly.

Celebrating 40 years!

The DŌSHI Center for Contemporary Art, founded by Maya Schock in Harrisburg in 1972, was incorporated into the operations of the Susquehanna Art Museum in 1997. In spirit with the mission of the original DŌSHI Center (named for a Japanese word meaning “brotherhood”), the DŌSHI Gallery provides a venue for emerging and established Pennsylvania artists to exhibit their work, explore new ideas, and develop a dialogue with the Museum and the community.

The DŌSHI Gallery features about ten exhibits per year. All of the works exhibited are chosen by a panel of jurors, and a majority of the works on display are available for purchase.

Invitations for juried thematic group exhibits are sent periodically to members, so if you are interested in them, become a Museum member today!

At the Susquehanna Art Museum, dreams become reality. In 1989, SAM began as a mere dream in the minds of a group of central Pennsylvania art educators who felt strongly that the capital city needed an art museum. Guided by a desire to provide a forum innovative, relevant and engaging exhibitions and experiences that foster life-long learning, these educators, supported by community leaders, businesspersons and a group of dedicated volunteers worked to make this dream reality.

A little more than two decades years later, SAM is central Pennsylvania’s only dedicated art museum, mounting exhibits that reflect the diverse cultural heritage of the community as well as a wide range of aesthetic interests. The main galleries feature the artworks of nationally and internationally recognized artists. The DOSHI Gallery for Contemporary Art, which has a rich history in the Harrisburg community, spotlights the works of more than 110 regional artists annually.

Inspiring and enriching lie at the heart of SAM’s innovative cultural arts program, the VanGo! Museum on Wheels. Reaching 20,000 students each year, VanGo! brings original works of art to students who otherwise lack such opportunities and provides an incredibly entertaining, educational and powerful program that connects the visual arts and academics. VanGo! teaches all children that creativity lies within every human being, and provides a forum for further development of important problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

SAM is dedicated to encouraging and inspiring visitors of all ages to become more familiar with; knowledgeable of and appreciative of the art and culture that surrounds them. Educational programming is developed to enhance and enrich the visitor experience, providing a wide variety of classes, lectures, workshops, discussions, critiques and more for adult learners. SAM’s youth art programs explore drawing, painting, sculpture, art history and art appreciation and provide a unique educational experience where students can learn from original works of art in a museum setting.

Today, the Susquehanna Art Museum occupies a unique place in our Commonwealth as central Pennsylvania’s leading visual arts resource for excellence and innovation in art education. What began two decades ago has blossomed into an organization rich in its dedication to the arts and providing a forum for all to discover, explore, create and inspire new dreams that with guidance, can bloom into exciting realities.
